What asset classes have historically done well in recesions? I can't think of anything better than cash. But, maybe there are some long term holds (companies, industries, businesses, etc)that run opposite to most asset classes during recesions; it could be any asset class. Thanks liorio, i was trying to seperate the ideas of falling dollar, and think more about historical patterns with recesions. All your ideas sound familiar. Later I will combine this train of thought with falling dollar scenarios. Their conflicting in some ways (inflation/deflation).
What is the best way to start your own personal asset management company? I am considering starting an "asset management company", most likely under a LLC status. But I want it to be my own assets. I would like to purchase (for rent) small homes, condos and/or townhouses and then eventually diversify the portfolio to mutual funds, stocks, bonds, franchises, etc. Adding my own money and any profits from the rentals. Is it a good idea to put it under an LLC? Would this even be considered an asset management company? An advice or tips is appreciated.
What types of items are considered an asset when applying for disability? I need to apply for disability due to a mental disorder. I am making payments on a car which I owe more than it's worth, and I have a couple of laptops. Other than that I have nothing of value besides cheap furniture, and clothes. What is considered an asset when applying for disability? What do I need to claim or let them know about? Should I transfer the car into a different person's name so I don't lose it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
How do you credit the asset account without incurring a credit to the R&M in the P&L as the parts are used? Spare parts are an assets in the balance sheet, but what if the parts were paid by a different division and the original entry is a debit to the spare parts inventory and a credit to the intercompany? (New parts, no depreciation) How do you credit the asset account without incurring a credit to the R&M in the P&L as the parts are installed? The problem is that it's not a sale, it's a transfer. Division A has assumed responsibility for the liability of the asset/inventory and transferring it without that liability
Asset Transfer question. How do you transfer an asset like a house to avoid probate? Are there any particular rules of thumb in tranferring ownership of an asset like a house to a beneficiary prior to your death so you can avoid taxes and probate? What can and can't you do? Tks. So if you just transfer the house over using a lawyer, is this realistic? Does there have to be a sale done? If so, is fair market price required? If not, what about gift taxes? Lots of questions...appreciate your help.
How is a static software product classified as a business asset? Company owns & markets an old software product. Was the first of its kind, fully home grown, no long term future. But will still sell decently for probably 3-5 years. Proprietary nature precludes re engineering, so is architecturally static. No true R&D possible, though can be improved in marginal ways, which clients like. So, exactly how would this product be classified as a business asset, from the perspective of management/accounting?
What easy and free Asset Manager software is available? I'm looking for a asset management solution for our school network. Our main concerns are keeping track of PCs and what sofware/hardware is installed. It would be great if these came in the same app, but price is a concern, since we are a school and free would be the best option. I'm familiar with Spiceworks, which looks ok, but I want to consider alternatives. But if people know of similar apps and can mention their pros and cons it would be a huge help.

How do I know if I need to report my car as a business asset sale on my taxes? We used this car partly for business and partly for personal use. We sold it in 2009 and my Tax Cutt is saying I need to report it as a sale of business asset. I am so confused! We bought the car. My husband works in sales, so he used it partly for business and partly for personal use. We sold it this year. We usually deduct mileage on the car, and in our tax program when we checked the box indicating we sold it, it told us to report it as a business asset sale. I am so confused. Is this something we should do?
What are the best websites for info on forming a corporation and asset protection? I live in CA and will be investing in Real Estate starting with Tax Liens. I need info on necessary forms, documents, etc. to form my own corporation, how and where to file, how to protect my assets and save on taxes. I have read about LLC and Family Limited Partnership for asset protection, but was hoping to do most of the work myself and hire a lawyer only when necessary. Nothing against lawyers, but like to do what I can myself before bringing in a pro! Thanks for any help or advise someone can give me.

Is my purchased foreclosure a taxable asset? I've purchased a foreclosed property. No liens or back taxes. I own the deed free and clear. This property is in a 'condemned notice' status by the township, but i am resurrecting it as a primary residence. My question is, do i have to claim this structure as a taxable asset since it is condemned. I can understand the land being considered an asset, but until i have a CO for the property, is it an asset ? Thanks. Any other advice on this topic is thoroughly appreciated.
In the business world, what do the terms derivative and asset mean? I've been reading lots of business articles in editorials and magazines lately but have no clue what a derivative or an asset is. If so, could you define and explain those two words as if you're talking to a 10-year old? *A side question: so what is Obama planning to do with derivatives? Is he now going to limit the exchange of derivatives from those big companies like AIG? Thanks

The equipment (car) is debited and the cash is credited. What is the normal balance of the account? Is an unpaid home an asset or liability? I bought a home a few years ago and due to the way loans work, have only paid a small amount of the principle. Are asset management firms good places to work for accountants? I've been working in the entertainment industry as an accountant and am debating if I should transition to work in the asset management firms. I've heard really good reviews from my friends who work in asset management. However they work in the IT and portfolio control departments which makes it difficult for me to determine if the accounting department in asset management firms are a good place for accountants (work environment, managment, potiental for growth)? Thanks in advance
How can we transform the huge population of India into an asset? India has a huge skilled and unskilled manpower which is not treated as a part of natural resource. As a result our assets are under valued, about 45% of the population comprising women are involved in productive work at "homes" but their work remains to be valued interms of GDP contribution. For any woe or problems of inefficiency, the population is blamed. It is high time this population is considered an asset and out flowsheets are modified accordingly. How do we do it?

Is the JP Morgan Buyout of Bear Stearns an asset sale or a statutory merger? To me it appears that it is more in line with an asset sale rather than a statutory merger due to the fact that Bear Stearns will still seemingly exist at the end of the transaction, though be controlled by JP Morgan. Well, that being said it definitely IS an asset sale. It is simply resulting in a de facto merger of sorts since Bear will eventually dissolve. However, because of the principles of independent statutory significance, this type of deal screams asset sale to me. Basically, by making it an asset sale rather than a straight merger, JPMorgan prevents their shareholders from getting a vote on the deal.
What exactly, in easy words, does the duration of an asset mean? I'm a first year Actuarial Science student as the University of Cape Town. I cannot grasph the meaning and application and reason of the discounted mean term or also know as the duration of an asset? I know it is the weighted average of the terms to each payment, weighted by the present value of the payment... but it still doesn't mean anything to me. What does "weighted by" means? Thank you very much... english is not my home language so understanding certain terms together, at this stage, is difficult.
Could someone explain asset mothballing in terms of depreciation? I am trying to figure out how mothballing affects the depreciation of a fixed asset. For example, if a company mothballs a particular asset (e.g. a building), does that temporarily halt all depreciation expenses associated with it? I am trying to find the answer in regards to US GAAP, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
